The Dangers Of Building Your Own Spray Booth

Spray Booth

What Is A Spray Booth?

A spray booth is an important piece of safety equipment that needs to be utilised when using things such as airbrushes and other solvents; which allows you to spray paint whilst avoiding risk to yourself and those around you. The chemicals involved in things such as airbrush spray painting and related processes are often harmful to humans so a spray booth is the safe and sensible approach to coping with removing of toxins.spray-booth

A spray booth is comprised of an open fronted enclosure that has a fan at the rear in order to extract the fumes from any paints or other substances that you may be spraying. The airflow is controlled within the spray booth, which means that the toxic fumes are drawn off and this controlled environment also helps to reduce over spray, therefore you are likely to produce better results.

The removal of harmful by products by using a spray booth, means that you your work space will be less harmful, which if you are spraying at home is especially important. If you’re involved in hobbies like modelling, then a spray booth such as the exagon is ideal, as it can be used in a number of different positions which means you can paint from different angles and produce better results. This also allows you to use the spray booth for things like soldering and

The Dangers Of Using Airbrush Paints And Solvents

– Fumes – The main risk of using solvents and airbrush paints, is that they can produce toxic fumes which are harmful to humans. The substances involved can cause physiological issues such as respirator problems including asthma, or even things as serious as brain damage. If you build your own spray booth you risk not having the correct removal of emissions, as the device won’t have had the rigorous testing that a professionally built spray booth would have.

– Fire and Explosion – when you use volatile substances such as paint, the risk of fire and explosion is a real one. The build up of vapours in the from the spraying can be highly flammable and in the case of a homemade spray booth that uses off the shelf components, these parts have been modified for the purposes and therefore aren’t specifically designed for being part of a spray booth.

Were you to build yourself a spray booth for your home workspace, there is potential that the fan or wiring that you use aren’t 100% suited for the purpose, in an environment where there are flammable fumes then there is potential that the slightest spark could lead to fire or explosion, making the environment one that is potentially hugely risky.

– Quality – Although not strictly a danger, the quality of the finish that you get with your products may be significantly lower if you have a homemade spray booth rather than a professionally built one as the removal of overspray will be easier. A professionally built spray booth will look better in your workspace as it has a professional finish.

Choosing The Right Spray Booth

Overall, if you are using a spray booth either professionally, then it is important to do it in a safe environment, that allows you to work without fear of danger to yourself. Buying a professionally built and produced spray booth is a way to maximise your safety while doing something you enjoy. Making your own spray booth may be cheaper; however the value of your health is priceless.

So what spray booth should you look into? From the perspective of model making, then you are likely to be looking for something that will allow you to carry out your hobby in safe fashion, that is also not a huge financial outlay. One highly recommended spray booth is the Exagon. Able to operate in a number of positions and affordable for those modelling as a hobby, then the Exagon is certainly worth looking into!
